What do you think is the max we'd be willing to offer? I think we need to dip into the coffers and offer close or at 1mm. The Board and "higher-ups", by this point, need to see the benefits this run is having for the school. National publicity like never before. Alumni engagement through the roof. It's worth it.

My hope would be that we can be close to if not tops in the Valley, which would mean in the $850-950k range, I think. To do that, I think fundraising would need to improve pretty dramatically.

Could the school dip into the endowment? I wonder what the process for that would be.

I read somewhere that our endowment has recently grown to about $750 million! About 5 years ago, I recall the endowment was roughly $400 million. That's pretty significant growth thanks to a great bull market. Wouldn't hurt to put away around 5-10 million bucks from the endowment and use it to match donations for a major athletics fundraising campaign.

Now is the time for Loyola to try and raise money! Heck, maybe they should be sending out texts and e-mails with links to a fundraising page right after the games. Most of us would probably be much looser with our wallets after 3 or 12 drinks!

Answering my own question here after a bit of "research"

Endowment Spending Policy

"NOW THEREFORE, BE IT AND IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED by the Board of Trustees of the University that, in the absence of a donor agreement to the contrary, annual spending from any endowment fund shall not exceed 5% of such endowment fund’s net asset value as of the applicable measurement date (including the applicable fiscal year) that is selected from time to time."

Based on that, it appears that the University may be able to spend up to 5% of the cash value of the endowment (which would be approximately $37.5 million...though I'm not sure if there is a difference between the total endowment and the cash value of the endowment) in a fiscal year. Even if some funds were restricted by donor agreements, it seems that we definitely would be able to find the funds if we had the will to do so.

I was a student at SIU when Bryan played there. Heck of a player, and seems to be a natural born leader and coach as well. Wish SIU had the smarts to make a move and hire him away from you guys and make him the HC, but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen. If not, I hope for Loyola's cases that they're able to hang onto him.

Yeah... in The current college basketball climate where there are scum bag coaches being investigated left and right and schools whose images are being tarnished because of it, there is a guy at a small school in Chicago that embodies everything that’s great about the sport and wins people over with every enthusiastic interview he gives.... and has a final four appearance to back up the validity in the statement “you can do things the right way and still win.” This dude doesn’t interview for jobs anymore... he chooses wherever he wants to be now. Hopefully he chooses Loyola....

Mark Few has been head coach at Gonzaga since 1999. He’s been at the school since 1989. He could have left for a bigger program probably every year since 2002. It’s reported that even after making the NCAA tourney every year, right now he’s making 1.3 million. He’s obviously found a place he loves and isn’t willing to trade that for a bigger opportunity. He’s living proof it’s not always about money in college coaching. Porter is in position to do the same thing in his hometown that he loves.

Keep Calm and Ramble On.

Great point. It's not widely known but when Mark Few arrived at Gonzaga in '89 as a $1,500 a year Grad Assistant, he was pulled aside by some Campus Elders (Jesuits) and told the following. "You will never finish in first place here and that's okay. Just don't finish last. Last place isn't tolerated around here." Those were his marching orders. He, assistant Coach Dan Monson and assistant Coach Billy Grier (roommates) decided to change that paradigm. Monson got the head coaching job in '97-'98 (Few was Assistant Head Coach) and that was the start of this "run".

Few got his first chance to "leave" in '00. Then a steady stream of interested big boy schools.

He felt that he could win at Gonzaga. He saw what a miserable time his friend Dan Monson was having at Minnesota. Monson's dad Don Monson had a horrible time after moving from h.c. at Idaho to h.c. at Oregon. Also, Few's dad was Pastor at the same church for 53 years ...

I'm hopeful that Moser and Few will talk (they have to know each other). I'm hopeful that your guy will stick around .... That'd be something.

Chris Mack to Louisville - 7 years and $31mm guaranteed with major incentives each year that could drive the package - in a great season - towards the $6 million mark. Rumor is that it won't go to Steele (associate HC) unless outside candidates - including and targeting PM - say no.

Curious where you saw this? I've mostly seen that Steele is the front runner

rumors are from friends of mine in AD and coaching world of D1. I stress rumors only. But -- Xavier and Porter have been whispered about for the last 3 weeks. My guys were pretty close on the Mack to Lville -- they thought a $25m package and 5 years. Hearing he balked at the length due to the turnaround needed.

Thoughts on Steele is that Xavier thinks they need an experienced coach given the elite 8 last year and #1 seed this year to maintain the state of the program.

We will see -- could be a way off and the Muskies turn to Steele tomorrow.
