Catch and Shoot is reporting 5 years for Porter.

Not sure if I'm comfortable with that long. Guess we'll see.

5 years for a .440 winning percentage and 1 CBI run for a coach who didn't have a career winning record before he got here to begin with is ridiculous. But now the onus is on Porter and the team. As Brot said, it's rug cutting time. Im rooting for him cause Lord knows we're overdue for an NCAA tournament appearance. If it goes south though, we've put ourselves in a huge hole.

Said it runs through 21-22, so it's a four year extension (or a new five year contract starting now, depending on how you want to look at it).

A 4 year "extension" is slightly more manageable. It's still a boom or bust contract.

Porter's definitely improved our recruiting, with relatively limited resources, the general direction of the program is pointing up, so no problem with the extension here.

The more I think about it, the more I see a three dimensional chess move. By locking him up now, you potentially save quite a few dollars at the end of what is hopefully a great next season and maybe the goodwill is enough where Porter turns down a better job if he gets offered one. I could see a tourney run lead to offers from schools like Nebraska or DePaul: steps up but by no means blue blood jobs. They're the kind of schools that won't blow us out of the water and are somewhat predisposed to go after the mid major coach du jour in a short sighted attempt to win the press conference.

That said, there's still a ton of risk. Next year's team is going to be Porter's best shot to break through. I don't know where Townes and Custer are in their academic careers, but they could very well graduate and transfer, which means the 2018-19 team will have to replace maybe all 5 starters (assuming Krutwig doesn't start next year). If they don't win next year and regress in 18-19, this contract will look like a bust.

Risk vs reward. Risk is you stay where you've been the last few years, which is still better than the last 30. Reward is you could keep improving, and have a coach at a relative bargain, who you showed faith in and in turn wants to be here.

- BUMP —

Self reflection can sometimes be interesting. Take a minute to read this thread. This is where most of us were almost a year ago today with the Porter Moser contract extension - nobody was mad... nobody was extremely happy. What a difference 12 months can make. We’ve went from “5 years is a little too much” to “ do everything you can, including throwing millions of dollars at this guy.” The current situation is a nice problem to have for us one year removed from this thread.
