UIC wannabees. Legends in their own minds. Inferior academics, concrete block campus, admits anybody, airplane hanger arena, course credits can be obtained from clipping out coupons on little kid cereal boxes, little brother complex and as for the flame, yes flaming a--h---s.
Did they seriously think the Valley was interested in them?

Yikes! Settle down, streak. UIC is an OK institution academically (better than most Horizon schools). Their graduate programs are very good. The arena isn't that bad (although the curtain drives me nuts), and their capacity is better than ours. They've been to the NCAA tournament more recently than we have, and their enrollment is 30% higher than LU. I was afraid those factors might have swung an offer their way instead of ours.

The difference-maker is we've shown a much stronger and current commitment to athletics, we're in better shape financially, and we've got more tradition in the long haul. Our academics are a feather in the cap of the MVC, and we also provided a better public-private balance. And if anyone in St. Louis saw the Lighting of the Flame video, that could have been the clincher.

Yeah, my comments were definitely overboard but how arrogant is it to go ahead and buy the MVC patches for uniforms before you were invited to join and how about telling your recruits that you were as good as in?
Let UIC enjoy being with their old Mid Con buddies giving truth to the expression, "what goes around comes around." The Mid Con has come full circle. I was hoping that Valpo and Detroit could have joined us.

Maybe that was arrogant, but I hope UIC returns to contention in the HL. Howard is a class act and I want to see him have a great coaching career.

Also I hope LU/UIC continue to play non-conference every year. It seems logical but you never know.

Inferior academics

I've been through this before, but USNews comparison actually rates UIC higher than Loyola in a number of categories.

http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandrevie ... l-rankings

Loyola's overall ranking is slightly higher than UIC's due to your smaller class sizes, your better graduation rates, alumni giving rate, etc...things that, to me, aren't necessarily a measure of good academics.

It's very difficult to compare a private and public school. But stating UIC has inferior academics shows you haven't researched a thing. You're likely just another sheep with the mindset that private is always better than public. It's odd how that's a common theme, with Valpo thinking they're tops in the HL academically, and I'm sure Detroit feels the same way. Seriously, all you private folks appear to receive a little brainwashing for your $125k.

concrete block campus

It is architecturally interesting, and the campus is undergoing lots of improvements and beautification. Have you been there and walked around recently?

admits anybody

UIC admits 62.8% of applicants. LUC admits 54.9% of applicants. Not much of a difference there.

airplane hanger arena

A Loyola fan criticizing another's arena. Thanks for the laugh this morning. The Pavilion is a nice place to see a game. Although I'd love it if they'd turn the volume down a bit.

little brother complex

You fail to see the other side. You have big brother complex but you're not even big brother. If it makes you feel better to prop yourself up while putting UIC down, I'm not gonna blame you. Even UIUC has done it. But again, an argument can be made that you're looking up at UIC now. We offer a lot more, blow your research out of the water, and are ranked in many more categories. Your only saving grace is that you're private and USNews is biased towards you and you're financial resources and happy alumni that overpaid for their education.

as for the flame

the ceremony sucks...agreed. Our mascot is way better than yours though.

With that said, good luck in the MVC guys. Honestly, I hope you find success over there.

We had this discussion on your board and you ignored me for the most part. Your argument is that US News is irrelevant except for when it isn't. Can't have it both ways.

So very wrong. Your mascot is a dinosaur. Sure, you can claim it's a dragon, but then where are the wings? Dragons have wings. Your mascot, Boo Boo the Dinosaur, is a Barney wannabe. You may not like Lu Wolf, but at least there is history behind it. Your students chose the Flames because of the loose association with the Great Chicago Fire. Has nothing to do with UIC. Personally, I think you should go back to being called the Chicas. It's terribly fitting since you all have been moaning like a bunch of girls.

I was on board with UIC joining us in the MVC, but it's clear that you all could care less. You've got spurned lover syndrome and I can do without that. Best of luck in the Horizon...

A lot of professionals in the higher education field have decided that smaller class sizes and better graduation rates are much more than prima facie measurements of an effective education. There are literally thousands of studies, hundreds of doctoral theses, and terrabytes of test score data that supports this assertion.

If we're going to quibble about the elements of the US News methodology, how about talking about the peer ranking component, which is a large part of the formula that undoubtedly benefits UIC-- which constantly attempts to muddle its association and piggy back off the reputation of Urbana-Champaign. Also, Catholic affiliated schools in general tend to suffer in that measurement (Georgetown and Boston College being a few exceptions), presumably from the hordes of state school employees filling out their evaluation forms with visions of vicious grammar school nuns in their heads.

You want to know how arbitrary the peer evaluation rankings are? For three years the Chancellor of the school I work for gave me his to fill out.

JCT, our friend Big D believes that US News is biased towards private schools. I tried to inform him that his assertion is incorrect, but he ignored me. All you need to do is look at the rankings and see that over half of the top 100 are public universities.

As I posted over there...his argument reminds me of this:
