Colorado State Rams (3-0) at Loyola Chicago Ramblers (1-3) – 4:00pm Gentile Arena, Chicago, IL
The Ramblers return home for the week after going winless on the road and on neutral floor last week and look to correct their November misfortunes.
Wednesday night on the road at Wichita State, the Ramblers unforgettably got bombed from deep by Wichita State, by a score of 95-74. Throughout the contest the defense looked disorganized, incoherent, and disengaged at nearly all times with the Ramblers giving up an unacceptable 50-points in the first half. Opening the second, Loyola showed life, getting to within 7 thanks to a 10-0 run, but proceeded to give up 10 thereafter on a Shockers run. At that point the game felt like it had been decided. Deywilk Tavarez led the team with 16 going 5-9 from three.
"We clearly didn't execute our game plan tonight. Tonight wasn't great," said head coach Drew Valentine. "Our team needs to have more urgency. Hopefully, this is a wakeup call, and we remember who we play for and what Loyola represents."
Sunday afternoon marks the 4th time Loyola and Colorado State meet up. The Rams basketball program had been rebuilt the last 7 seasons under Niko Medved, and under his leadership reached the NCAA Tournament 3 times (each in last 5 seasons). The Rams have been Mountain West Conference contenders the past 5 of 6 seasons, and have consistently recruited NBA prospects and top talent throughout their resurgence (David Roddy, Isaiah Stevens, John Tonje, Nique Clifford). I won't lie admitting that this has been a super fun basketball team to watch on the weekend Mountain West late-nite games the last handful of years. Last year's 2024-25 squad got hot at the right time, winning the Mountain West Tournament Championship and carried that momentum into the second round of March Madness before losing to Maryland on a last second heartbreak 72-71, preventing them from advancing to the Sweet-16. After the season, Medved took the Minnesota job, returning home, while associate head coach and Northern Iowa March Madness cult hero Ali Farokhmanesh was promoted to HC. A total of 16.9% of minutes played and 15.3% of scoring return from 2024-25 roster - another essentially brand new team whom the Ramblers are facing in game-5.
Colorado State has three games in the bag so far this season, having kicked things off against Incarnate Word (98-64), Omaha (97-74) and Cal Poly (93-79). That is a cupcake schedule thus far but they are destroying the teams they are supposed to and have displayed an offensive firepower, averaging 96 per game on this young season.
The Rams have 5 guys averaging 10ppg or more. They are led by 6-3 guard, Josh Pascarelli, who transferred from Marist @ 18ppg. He could be a handful for the Rambler defense, as he is shooting nearly 60% from the field and 52% from three. The other night Pascarelli hit 6 threes vs. Cal Poly. 6-9 F Kyle Jorgensen, one of the lone returnees from prior season, is second on the team in scoring at 15ppg and is a rebounding leader with 7. Rounding out the scoring options are 6-1 G and Virginia transfer Brandon Rechsteiner @ 13ppg, 6-10 F/C Illinois transfer Carey Booth 13ppg and 9.0rpg, and off the bench is 6-8 F from Lithuania Augustinas Kiudulas at 10ppg.
On paper, the Rams will have a clear height advantage over the Ramblers, running a lineup with at least 2, possibly 3, guys on the floor who are each between 6-8 to 6-10. Two of whom are above-average rebounders – Jorgensen and Booth. I expect continued rebounding issues to linger against Colorado State.
The Rams have cruised through three games without too much difficulty so far and their offense is cooking over the first 3 games. The Ramblers meanwhile continue to struggle at both ends of the floor – neglecting the glass, getting outscored in the paint, not making the winning hustle plays, not running anything coherently offensively, and have displayed significant defensive shortcomings in 3 of 4 games thus far. Due to the Rams offense and Ramblers defensive metrics, CSU could be in control most of the way. But there is good news – this is a very winnable game!
Colorado State Probable Starters – 6-10 C Carey Booth, 6-9 F Kyle Jorgensen, 6-6 G Jevin Muniz, 6-3 G Josh Pascarelli, 6-1 G Brandon Rechsteiner
Loyola Probable Starters – Rubin, TBD, Love III, Moore, Tavarez
