It seems these two changes are related, but maybe not. The AD reports to the Student Affairs VP. But he has tons of programs to oversee and athletics is just one of them. I don't think the record of the men's basketball team or anything else in athletics except a major scandal would be enough to get him fired.

A problem that I see is that an interim VP who may not have any knowledge of athletics will be, at least nominally, in charge of hiring the new AD at least at the start when they are engaging a search firm. I actually like the structure that puts athletics within Student Affairs, but this is a potential problem.

Interesting point, Scream.

I have a feeling that Dr. Pelissero will be nominally in charge and Fr. Garanzini will get the person he wants.

Is your President not responsible for the hiring of an AD?

Yes and no. The president is a very hands-on guy, as Brot says, and even small details can get his attention. I think just about everyone here has faith in his judgment. On the other hand, we are like Vanderbilt in that the AD does not report directly to the president, so there are layers below the president who may have a hand in this. I worry that some of those layers know no more about how to hire an AD than I do. I do know that search firms can hijack the process if you are not firm about what you are looking for.

Thanks for the info. I was just reflecting back to when we lost a great AD and I know the President here was the man to make the decision. I didn't even think about the setup being different elsewhere and that your AD didn't report directly to the Prez. I hope you don't have too much bureaucracy get in the way of a good hire.

Why should Calhoun get any credit for the continuing success of the men's volleyball program and the achievements of the track/cross country squads. Those teams were coached by holdovers from Planek's regime.

The Sheryl Swoopes' hire was pure luck, a gift that fell into Calhoun's lap. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

While the men's vball coach was a holdover from the Planek regime, the track/xc coach from Planek's regime was fired by Calhoun and a new one brought in. And while yes, most of the track stars were recruited during the Planek era, the conventional wisdom was that the athletes improved a lot more under this coach than the previous coach. Also, I commend Calhoun for the Swoopes hire as creative, outside-the-box thinking, it's still way too early to tell how much positive impact Swoopes has on our program.

I stand corrected. Good catch.
