Looks like some folks in the AAC aren't too happy with the WSU move: https://the-boneyard.com/threads/wichit ... al.110294/

Some of my favorite:

-Clown school
-3rd best school in Kansas
-Middle of nowhere
-Hayseed school
-Bad academics
-Outkicked its coverage

Someone also decided to take a shot at us...figures. "Um...you want to play Loyola and Drake on the road?"

LOL. What goes around, comes around. I wonder if a Connecticut reporter will go down to Wichita and pull a Pat Tomasulo bit asking them about the Wizard of Oz.

The interesting thing is they need 9 of the AAC's 11 presidents to vote them in this Friday. Maybe UConn or the private schools (Temple, Tulane, SMU) hold out the yes votes that put WSU over the top out of snobbery. I also think UConn would stipulate adding VCU and Dayton just to even out the East/West difference. Also interesting is that Cincinnati and UConn both seem pretty restless to leave for an actual Power 5 conference. Memphis and Houston might have missed their chance at the Big 12.

There is speculation, some of it spawned by their AD posting a photo online, that WSU will also commit to adding football.

Blanche!
I thought you were dead.

Care to comment on the rumor I heard that Butler plans to rehire Brandon Miller and leave the Big East for the Summit Conference?

And is there any truth to the speculation that DuckOnA Rock was Mike Pence?

UConn fans are to the AAC as WSU are to the MVC as far as it goes online.

In reality its probably only the most obnoxious fans but they're sadly the loudest. Displeased with everything, and dump on fans of any other program anytime they try and act positively about their program or the state of affairs, and wildly defensive of anything negative regarding their program... It's just toxic and exhausting.

In defense of UConn fans, they have way more to back it up than WSU. There are no National Championship banners hanging in Koch Arena. UConn has 4 from the past 20 years from just the men's team. Despite last week's game, you can still make the argument that the UConn women are the most dominant sports team on the planet. Hell, even their football team went to the Fiesta Bowl in the past decade.

They also used to play in a conference with great athletic schools (Louisville, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Pitt) and great academic and athletic schools (Villanova, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Miami, Providence, Marquette, Syracuse, BC, St. John's). They now play in a conference with lower tier state schools academic-wise (the Floridas, East Carolina, Houston, Tulsa, Memphis, Cincinnati, and now Wichita) compared to the other schools in those states (UF, UNC, Texas, Ohio St., etc.) that have non-existent presences in UConn's main student base of NYC & Boston. UConn is also one of the harder public schools to get into for out-of-state students - admission rate around 50%, average GPA around a 3.7. That was probably helped in no small measure by being in a conference like the old Big East. There's no way WSU's academics (or any of the AAC except for Tulane and maybe SMU) compare to that. Combine the fact that those schools have had a mere fraction of the recent athletic success they've had, I'd be pretty pissed too if I were a Husky fan.

WSU might have a better basketball team next year than UConn, but make no mistake, they are still a ways away from UConn's level.

Now that it's official, let's hope that a suitable replacement can begin to fill a big hole.

WSU was in the Valley for 72 years. That's longer than the entire existence of most conferences. There have been a ton of big conferences that have come and gone and been nearly forgotten since (Metro, Great Midwest, Skyline, etc.). So it's going to be a huge blow. I'm disappointed, but I guess it was inevitable. Their fan base has been itching for bigger challenges, and they're going to get it. They're going to love having UConn come to Wichita, but I don't know how much they're going to like road trips to Greenville, NC to play a team with a 214 RPI. Tampa is a nice place to go, especially during January, but they'll be playing a team with a 314 RPI, two spots ahead of Drake.

The most disappointing thing is their badmouthing and bellyaching about the conference. I know what it's like to be disgruntled with a conference, and their complaints about the MVC were sometimes believable, sometimes absurd. There was no bias toward other teams.... Their dislike of St. Louis as a venue for the tournament was insane, in my opinion, and I hope they like Cincinnati, Memphis, and Tulsa. Maybe for a few years they'll be welcome in the AAC, or maybe they'll get shit poured all over them like some WSU fans did to Loyola when we joined the MVC. Maybe they'll do really well, maybe they'll be the fourth best team in a two or three-bid league.

It's also disappointing that Loyola and the other lower rung teams couldn't keep up with WSU. In the four years we've been in the league, only UNI and ISUr have maintained the quality necessary for this conference to move ahead. Loyola has shown moments and glimpses of where we should be, but we haven't been able to get past the mental block of MAINTAINING success on a consistent basis. SIU and ISUb have overachieved for their budget and talent level-- they have the potential to be pretty good if they got their school administration behind stronger basketball programs. MSU might just be a coaching issue. Evansville has had two good years and two miserable ones. I have some hope that Bradley might be a .500 team next year. A good replacement for WSU like Valpo (not sure if they're going to maintain their strength without the Drew family) and getting Drake better is probably the best way to make the conference healthy after this devastating blow.
