I say--WE win out as LOYOLA CHgO will exceed GTN in the end !! Porter signs a new deal WITH US--and LUC as usual takes seemingly forever to announce it !!!!

Commnts anyone !!!

To be fair to the AD, you can’t really compare our situation to that of Butler in terms of the coach. Butler had been winning and going to the tournament for over a decade when they made their big run. They had already lost some coaches who moved up to bigger jobs in the process. We...hadn’t even made the tournament in years, and hadn’t even had a winning conference record in a decade. This type of run and attention, while amazing and needing to be capitalized on, was a surprise. By my count, up to this point they have been making steady steps and commitments towards long term improvements. They just reworked and extended Porter’s contract last year (to much debate about the wisdom of that on this board, if I recall). They committed to a huge new practice facility before most media even knew where the lakeshore campus was. To me plans have been in place and acted upon...but this just unexpectedly accelerates some of them.

I'm firmly with 86 on this one. How was this not a done deal before the Final Four even? There should have at least been the outline of an agreement and an memorandum of understanding signed before the team got to San Antonio.

It could include some sort of sliding scale of additional $$ depending on the teams performance at the FInal Four, but to let your coach go into that game without an extension in place is at best risky. And not just because of the risk you lose your coach (especially if other schools are going around formal channels), but because you risk losing him for probably next to nothing. With a big money extension comes a big money buy out, and if there wasn't some new agreement in place, Loyola was in a position where they could not only lose Porter, but not get market value in return.

For all parties involved, I disagree with the notion that it needed or should’ve been done last week. We’re in uncharted territory for the school financially (not to mention in a current contract dispute with faculty. Don’t pretend that doesn’t play a role in timing). So is Porter. For everyone involved, taking a step back and fully realizing exactly what the financial boost has been is a smart thing to do. Had we as the alumni and donor base done a better job in previous years of supporting the program, it’d be a lot easier to just get it done quickly. But we started behind the 8 ball. I’m glad they didn’t just rush into it. Exactly what schools are we really fighting off right now to the point that it has to be done yesterday? Likely not not ones that aren’t already in our ballpark. They were clearly and admittedly talking even right after the MVC tournament. Take enough time to know exactly where everyone is at, and make sure the deal is solid for everyone.

I stated earlier,,,I do not want to be Tennessee or Louisville........I also value the education I got at Loyola and that will always come first...as I guess it does for the 16,000 that do not play basketball. What LU has a chance to do , is not become Tennessee or Louisville but become LOYOLA....the school that excels academically and athletically to a very high degree. I also agree with 01, Steve Watson has been here 3 years, two of which were extremely difficult financial years for the University. He extended Porters contract last year for 5years, that is faith without evidence and showed good vision. Steve was also able to get the new practice facility under way.Steve Watson is not Loyal Parks. Steve Watson also left his last school Sr. Bonaventure in pretty good shape. Also to be working out a contract while the team is working towards the Final Four? Yes I understand how athletics can help academics and how academics can help athletics...It is a balancing act and I believe they are going about it the correct way ,you can call it old school, new school, rock n roll school.
So here we sit...#1 in graduating athletes IN THE NATION and our basketball team was in THE FINAL FOUR!. Our women's team is making the turn, our two time NATIONAL CHAMPION in volleyball remains competitive etc. I hate to say it,,because I want Coach Moser back, think he is the perfect fit for LU. However I do not think it is or should be the top priority of an already GREAT UNIVERSITY.

I agree with Nate. If the university wanted to organize like a sports power it would have done so between 1985 and now. To suggest Watson should have preplanned for this is not realistic. Ideally Loyola would have put the financial and administrative resources towards this ahead of time, but realistically a reactionary approach makes more sense.
I think that is what Porter has been getting at. Going forward, he wants to know that the University supports his vision of rebuilding a basketball powerhouse. That involves many structural changes in how the athletic department interacts with the president and board of trustees.
Loyola is right in waiting to see if this was going to work. Now it has and Porter is the perfect person for the Loyola vision and to continue the success. Now Loyola needs to restructure like Villanova, Butler, Gonzaga, etc. to keep things going.
That’s what Porter wants and that’s what I got from Watson’s interview. Now hopefully the board of trustees and president will get it done!

He is working,,,he is out recruiting...and do not forget ..he is under contract already.....do not know what the buy out clause would be for another school to grab him.

Keep in mind it takes both parties in the contract. I do not feel that Moser was or is in a hurry either. Right now he more than likely make more money but would have risk as well.

His best option is to stay and get his team back to the dance. There are not a lot a big time jobs open right now so why leave.

We return 3 starters returning and someone who started some games. In addition we have a high level transfer. With three open spots we can land two players who can step in and help.

Yeah, I don't know why Porter would have jumped into an extension with us during the tourney run when schools that pay $2M a year were reaching out to him.
